Workshop: Become an illustrator with l’œil du monde

Wednesday, October 19

Nantes-based illustrator Emmanuelle Houssais is offering children the chance to embark on an illustrative journey to the Great North.

Using paint and cut-out stencils, children will piece together a landscape of the Great North dotted with polar bears, snow foxes, penguins, seals, Arctic wolves and whales in the form of an illustrated accordion book or leporello. They will write a short Japanese poem or haiku telling the story unfolding on the pages of the leporello created during this workshop.

Svalbard Archipelago in Norway

Friday, November 4 from 8:30 pm to 10:00 pm

First stop in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago. Longyearbyen is the northernmost city on the planet. Year round, 2,500 souls inhabit this untamed, glacial territory, so hostile for Man, in fact, that no one has been able to settle there up to now. With Mother Nature turning the hands of a well-oiled clock alternating between polar nights and midnight sun, life would be impossible without the mammoth efforts put in place by the city’s residents. A “gold mine” financially speaking, its long-standing coalmine has provided Longyearbyen with all the modern-day comforts needed to face the harshness of the Arctic. Alexandra Alévêque spent a little over two weeks immersed in a literally round-the-clock day-to-day to the tune of a nonstop face-off between stupefying and startling!
