Oko do Světa, Baobab publishing house, Czech Republic

The Czech version of the Eye of the World “Oko do světa” (the Eye of the World in Czech) is based on a partnership with libraries and the presence of ambassadors (authors, editors, illustrators) from the 12 publishing houses. The project aims to build strong links between publishers and librarians that will enable workshops, meetings and readings to be held with schools.

From 5 to 8 September 2024 in Tábor, on the occasion of the Tabook festival, which has been organised by Baobab Publishing for many years, has highlighted the artists of the Eye of the World as well as the libraries associated with the project in the context of professional meetings, workshops, exhibitions and readings.

Workshop “The masks” with Blexbolex

This workshop gave participants the opportunity to meet French artist, cartoonist and illustrator Blexbolex and to learn a colouring technique using stencils. Participants created paper stencils and then used them to create an original mask. 15 children and their parents took part in the workshop.

Workshop with Magdalena Rutová

The workshop introduced the children to Magdalena Rutová, the Czech author and illustrator of the book ‘I, Octopus’. She guided the children in a very sensitive way towards a deeper awareness of man’s negative impact on the environment. She took the children to an imaginary ‘waste conference’ and they explored the different plastic and other waste that we commonly have in our homes, and thought about how to bring it back to life in innovative ways. The children worked with plastic waste and created artistic and practical objects. They had the opportunity to think about the amount of waste our society produces and, at the same time, how plastics could be recycled and reclaimed. 22 primary school pupils, accompanied by their teachers and librarians, took part in the workshop.

Workshop with Daniela Olejníková

The workshop introduced the children to the book ‘Myko’ by Jiří Dvořák and Daniela Olejníková, which won first place at the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair in the non-fiction category, and showed them in a fun way why mushrooms are important and how interesting they are. The children listened to extracts from the book, then had a creative space to create their own imaginary mushrooms. They cut, pasted, drew with markers and coloured pencils and came up with scientific names for their mushrooms. This is how, for example, the panacea (a fungus for all illnesses), the strawberry fungus, the water tank fungus, etc. 24 primary school pupils accompanied by their teachers and librarians took part in the workshop.

Workshop with Stanislav Setinský

The workshop presented the work of Czech illustrator Stanislav Setinsky and showed participants the technique of spraying with stencils to create unique illustrations. Participants had the opportunity to create an illustration on any theme using stencils and spray paint. 15 teenagers and their parents took part in the workshop.

Workshop “A surprising and mysterious city” with Joëlle Jolivet

This workshop introduced the children to the work of the famous French illustrator Joëlle Jolivet and showed them the possibilities of black and white illustration. The children’s task was to paint a house on a sheet of paper. They painted with ink and, using a light board, they also drew the house on the other side of the sheet with details that were not visible on the first side. Finally, they glued all the sheets together to form a city. Using a torch, the windows on the other side of the paper were illuminated and the details appeared. 15 art school children took part in the workshop.

Workshop with Manuel Marsol

In this workshop, illustrator Manuel Marsol showed the children the technique he used to create the illustrations for his book ‘Astro’, which were part of his exhibition. The children worked together to create a large-scale painting of a landscape on the planet Astro, learning the technique of mixing oil paint and acrylic paint and the effects such a painting creates. They followed the story in the Astro book and painted their astronauts in the landscape. Finally, they created a spaceship in which the astronaut could return home. The paintings were then displayed in the library. 26 children aged 6 to 15 took part in the workshop, along with their families.

Workshop “4 colours, 4 animals” by Junko Nakamura

Based on the illustration techniques used by author-illustrator Junko Nakamura (published by MeMo), the children experimented with the collage technique without using scissors. They glued together torn paper in different shades of the same colour to create an animal, which they then named and gave a short description of. Each child had the opportunity to complete their book. 15 primary school children took part in the workshop.

Workshop “Stitch an earthworm together” with Eva Volfová

A workshop to introduce children to illustrator Eva Volfová’s new book ‘Thread and the Stray Button”, published by Baobab, in which she creates embroidered illustrations. The children experimented with textiles, following the story in the book, sewing on a button as an eye, or working with sticks wrapped in fabric and securing the eye with wire. The children were able to meet the illustrator, who talked to them about her work and showed them an unconventional way of creating illustrations. The children also tried their hand at sewing, a skill that is a little forgotten these days. 15 primary school children took part with their teachers.

Workshop with Andrea Antinori and Jakub Plachy

A joint workshop with Italian author-illustrator Andrea Antinori and Czech author-illustrator Jakub Plachý reading their book, introducing their illustration technique and showing the process of creating a book. The workshop was based on Andrea Antinori’s book “The Mountain” to inspire the class on this theme: what can be found in the mountains and what is hidden inside? The workshop brought together 42 children and parents.

The aim was to introduce children to the work of two illustrators, Andrea Antinori and Jakub Plachý. Reading from the books, introducing the illustrator’s work, showing the process of working on the books. Art workshop by Andrea Antinori on the theme of his book La Montaña: the school classroom was transformed into a mountain landscape under Andrea’s guidance. What can we find there? And what might be hiding underground? With 20 pupils of primary school.

Baobab Editions

A small family publishing house, Baobab specializes in quality children’s books. Since its creation at the turn of the century, Baobab has been working hard to revitalize the Czech illustration tradition. This approach is reflected in collaborations with authors, writers and illustrators who share the same mindset, as well as identifying and supporting young emerging talents. Baobab thus contributes to the development of the European children’s literature scene and gives its readers access to the most remarkable illustrators of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In addition to publishing, Baobab has created and organizes many cultural events, the most important of which is the Tábook festival, which takes place every year in September and October in Tábor in the Czech Republic (tabook.cz). Baobab publishers work closely with the Miroslav Šašek Foundation, the Academy of Arts and Design in Prague (UMPUM), the Tabor Baobab gallery-boutique and the Xaoxax gallery in Prague’s famous Vršovice district.
