Festival
From March 25 to April 23, 2023, l’œil du monde will be dropping anchor at Lieu Unique in Nantes for a widespread multicultural festival. Following the workshops proposed by the partner libraries, both the young and young-at-heart are invited to play a more active part alongside the guest artists in the storymaking process by stepping into character through the handling, reading and listening to of the albums in their mother tongue and via a vast interactive exhibit showcasing all of the “adopted” publishers.

Ianna ANDREADIS
Petra Ediciones
Née à Athènes en 1960, elle vit en France depuis 1978.
As an artist, she uses her paintings, drawings and photos to reflect the importance she attributes to nature and urban settings. Books represent one of her favorite media for creation. In addition to several lithograph limited editions with the Atelier Franck Bordas and textile books for Les Trois Ourses, Ianna has also put together a considerable number of albums with her photos and drawings published in France, Greece, Mexico, India and Japan.
MeMo
Née en 1992, Gaby Bazin grandit au bord de la Méditerranée avant de rejoindre les rangs des Arts décoratifs de Paris. Elle s’y découvre une fascination pour la typographie et commence à cultiver une pratique de l’illustration tirant sur le graphisme. intéressée par tous les aspects de l’objet-livre, elle apprend la reliure, expérimente le pop-up, travaille avec diverses techniques d’impression: sérigraphie, gravure, risographie.
Dans les ateliers de Turin et de Prague, elle s’initie aux merveilles de la composition au plomb et de l’impression typographique. Un mémoire consacré aux rapports texte-image vus à travers le spectre du phylactère en bande dessinée, puis un diplôme sur l’apprentissage de l’écriture, viennent clôturer ces cinq années. Gaby fait aujourd’hui partie du collectif la Briche Foraine, installé à Saint-Denis. elle vit à Pantin et partage son temps entre des projets collectifs et personnels, ainsi que différentes monomanies dont font partie le trombone à coulisse et le dessin de lettres.
Tara Books
Après des études aux Beaux-Arts de Limoges et un master «Édition d’art, livres d’artistes”, Anaïs travaille en tant que relieuse de livres. Son intérêt pour le livre jeunesse, l’emmène à fouiller dans les archives du Père Castor puis à essayer différentes chaises au sein des Trois Ourses durant 7 ans. C’est à la suite de voyages à Madagascar et au Burkina Faso qu’elle reprend activement la broderie qu’elle avait apprise étant enfant. Elle lui permet à présent d’oeuvrer dans le champs de l’art, de l’illustration et du design textile. Son livre « A stitch out of time » paru chez l’éditeur indien Tara Books est le fruit d’une résidence chez ce même éditeur. Avec ce livre, elle devient aussi autrice. Elle vit et travaille à Montreuil.
MeMo
Born in Rennes, Janik Coat studied at the Beaux-arts de Nantes. She has worked as a graphic designer since 1999 and has published as an author-illustrator since 2005. Playing with shapes, contrasts and colors, she builds her images like posters. Her universe is essentially composed of stylized animals, composed of a few lines. This graphic sobriety is supported by joyful and humorous narrations, very appreciated by the youngest. This does not prevent him from dealing with universal themes, such as identity, difference or attachment.
Marta COMIN
A buen paso
Marta Comín was born in Santander in 1982. She graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Valence where she currently lives. Writing and illustration have been her go-tos when it comes to observing, contemplating and bringing original upfront and conceptual relationships to light, enabling entry to a space wherein to question, with awe and wit. Using a combination of colors, a stroke of seemingly-naive character and a delicate balancing act of full and empty portrayal, Marta proposes with brio a graphic language that is both easy to understand and to the point inspired by the works of children’s book authors Paul Rand and Fredun Shapur, the collages of Matisse and the graphic design of Ikko Tanaka.
Kitty CROWTHER

Née en 1970 en Belgique, Kitty Crowther est d’origine anglo-suédoise. Son enfance est marquée par une propension au rêve et un grand sens de l’observation. Très tôt, elle invente des histoires enchantant le quotidien. Durant son enfance, elle passe ses vacances dans un port de plaisance, aux Pays-Bas, lieu qui lui donnera le goût de la nature. Dans leur maison de famille, elle lit des classiques anglo-saxons, Richard Scarry, Beatrix Potter, et découvre également la littérature de jeunesse suédoise et française. Elle poursuit des études à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles et à l’école Saint-Luc, toujours dans l’optique d’être une « raconteuse d’histoire ». En 1994, parait son premier album. Depuis, elle n’a cessé de publier.
Inspirée par l’art brut et l’art inuit, elle dit appartenir aux illustrateurs qui « trouvent important d’aller à l’essence même du trait, et pas seulement de fabriquer des images ». Le silence et le temps des questionnements ont une vraie place dans sa narration. Ils participent à l’histoire, créant un univers où le non-explicite et l’invisible ont toute leur place. Les êtres étranges et les univers inconnus semblent familiers, résonnant en chaque lecteur. Elle a reçu de nombreux prix internationaux pour ses albums, notamment le prix Astrid Lingren en 2010.
MeMo
Multidisciplinary artist, Isaure Fouquet – aka Reazo – shares her time between free creations and artistic direction. Her universe, mixing symbolic elements, textures and raw forms, has developed in the urban environment. Frescoes, paintings or ceramics, she declines on various supports a poetic, graphic and dreamlike language. Between abstraction and figuration, the art of Isaure Fouquet addresses the imagination of each.
Topipittori
Mariachiara Di Giorgio est née à Rome en 1983. Elle a étudié l’illustration à Rome, à l’IED, et à Paris, à l’ENSAD. Pendant ses études universitaires, elle a commencé à collaborer en
tant que dessinatrice pour la FAO ainsi qu’en tant que scénariste et conceptrice pour des films et des agences de publicité. Entre 2010 et 2011, elle travaille comme décoratrice pour le tournage de La face cachée du soleil, un film de Carlo Hintermann et Lorenzo Ceccotti. Elle a rejoint le domaine de l’édition en 2012, illustrant certains des livres de Rodari pour Editori Internazionali Riuniti, suivi par Editori Laterza, DeAgostini, Else Edizioni, Mondadori, le magazine Linus et les boutiques de La Città del Sole. Son travail a été exposé à la Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition (2015
et 2016) et à la 58e édition de la New York Society of Illustrator’s Exhibition.
Gyong-Sook GOH

Gyong-Sook Goh studied Oriental Painting at Dankook University before earning her Master’s degree in Graphic Design at Sookmyung Women’s University.
She now does book illustration. She was granted the Graphic Design Award at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 2006 for her album, Flacons magiques.
Wytwornia
Diplômée de l’académie des Beaux-Arts de Varsovie, Malgorzata Gurowska est graphiste et illustratrice. Inspirée par l’art de affiche polonaise des années 60, elle emprunte à Malevitch les principes du suprématisme : géométrie des formes et dynamisme de la mise en espace. S’attachant à des formes claires et des aplats de couleurs, elle propose un graphisme minimaliste. Membre de différents collectifs, son travail est montré dans différents pays. En 2008, son travail autour de l’œuvre de Tuwim est primé par une mention à la foire internationale de Bologne, et en 2017, elle remporte le grand prix d’illustration du festival coréen NamiBook.
Petra ediciones
Artiste photographe, née en 1950 en Californie, résidente française depuis 1983, vit actuellement la plupart du temps au Mexique (Études d’arts plastiques et de cinéma ethnographique). En France elle publie son premier album: Poland aux éditions Créaphis, 1995. La même année, sa deuxième œuvre, La lotería fotográfica mexicana paraît au Mexique chez Petra Ediciones où elle a publié une dizaine de livres parmi lesquels El Guardagujas de Juan José Arreola, Italo Calvino en México, Sueño de Javier Sobrino et les imagiers en couleurs.
D’autres thèmes l’ont inspirée en noir et blanc : la splendeur du corps des femmes enceintes et l’énigmatique île de Cuba. Sa dernière série est un jeu d’images subjectives en couleurs : FotoTaroc.
Baobab
Juraj Horváth a étudié à l’Académie des arts et métiers de Prague dans le studio d’illustration et de conception graphique sous la direction du professeur Jiří Šalamoun. Il a effectué des stages dans le studio de photographie et de typographie. Il se consacre au dessin, au graphisme, à l’illustration et à la publication de livres pour enfants et adolescents dans la maison d’édition Baobab, qu’il dirige avec son épouse Tereza Horváthová. Il est derrière le projet de rue POPROSVET. En tant que graphiste et illustrateur, il travaille pour les maisons d’édition Argo, GplusG, Labyrint, Torst et Triada. Il a publié dans les magazines Souvislosti, Dotyk, Revolver Revue et Park. Depuis 2000, il est l’auteur du style visuel du Festival international du film documentaire de Jihlava. Son livre Tales from the Steam Bath a remporté le prix du plus beau livre du monde à la foire du livre de Leipzig en 2001. Depuis 2003, il dirige le studio d’illustration et de conception graphique de l’UMPRUM à Prague. De 2010 à 2015, il a conçu la programmation d’expositions de la galerie Baobab, axé sur l’art graphique, les livres d’auteur et l’illustration, ainsi que sur d’autres courants, plus artistiques que conceptuels, de l’art contemporain. Depuis 2012, avec Jan Čumlivský, il prépare la partie artistique du festival international Tabook.
Tereza HORVATHOVA
Baobab
Publisher, translator and author, she studied French Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University (FFUK) in Prague. In 2000, she and her husband, Juraj Horváth, founded the children’s book publishing house, Baobab. In 2011, she designed and organized the first year of the international festival of little-and-known indie publishers, Tabook. In addition to her work with the publishing house,
Tereza also finds time to write children’s books, prose and poetry, translate, and do occasional screenwriting. She was granted the Golden Ribbon Award in 2005 for her book, Blue Tiger, which inspired the book-to-screen adaptation by director Petr Oukropec.

Marta Ignerska est l’une des plus talentueuses graphistes et illustratrices polonaises. Elle publie ses livres notamment en Pologne, en France, en Suisse, en Allemagne, au Brésil. Connue par le public francophone pour « Nos plus grand rêves », « Ca va jouer », « Grand-Mère Tricot ». Lauréate de nombreux prix : European Design Awards, Bologna Ragazzi Award, Picture Book Award Vienna, prix IBBY International Board on Books for Young People, Polish Book Publishers Association Award, The White Ravens.
Bruno IRADUKUNDA
Bakame
Bruno Iradukunda is a graphic artist with a degree in communication design and a diploma from the London School of Art in children’s book illustration. He has illustrated several books, including the most famous “The Third Pearl or Isaro rya gatatu” and “Bakame Yasuye Inguge” published by Bakame Editions. In his illustration art, he uses watercolor and digital art. He is currently working as a senior illustrator with an international NGO, NABU specialized in creating digital content for children and youth.
Tara Books
Joëlle Jolivet est née le 31 août 1965 dans le Val de Marne et vit à Ivry-sur-Seine. Joëlle a toujours dessiné puis peint et gravé. Après des études de graphisme aux Arts appliqués de Paris, elle s’intéresse à la lithographie et suit des cours aux Beaux-arts. Cela la conduit à la gravure sur linoléum, son principal moyen d’expression aujourd’hui dans lequel elle excelle. Elle a publié plus d’une cinquantaine d’albums, dont la plupart sont traduits dans le monde entier. Elle travaille aussi pour la presse.
Ho Baek LEE
Jaimimage
Born in Seoul in 1962, this school-trained graphic designer spent five years in Paris where he entertained the idea and hope of creating his very own publishing house devoted to picture books. In the end, Seoul would prevail, becoming the headquarters of Jaimimage in 1994. Ho-Baek has also authored and illustrated albums, and was granted the New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book Award.
Madalena MATOSO

Born in Lisbon in 1974, Madalena Matoso graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon and Barcelona. In 1999, together with three friends, she founded Planeta Tangerina, an illustration
and graphic design studio specializing in children’s content, whose albums started to emerge on the publishing scene in 2006.
Children’s book and magazine author and illustrator, Madalena Matoso has been granted several illustration awards in Portugal. In France, her books are published primarily at éditions Notari, La Joie de Lire and Thierry Magnier.
Isabel MINHOS MARTINS
Planeta Tangerina
After her studies at Lisbon’s School of Fine Arts, Lisbon-native Isabel Minhós Martins born in 1974 diverged towards what would become her creative penchant, writing, in the form of album texts, comic scripts and cartoons. Being surrounded by illustrators and designers, both at home and at work, has taught her the relevance of pictures and the role words play in books.

Jakub Plachý est né à Prague en 1989. Après des études à l’Académie des Arts, de l’Architecture et du Design de Prague, il se consacre à l’illustration et au graphisme. Il partage son temps entre la création et la librairie-galerie Xaoxax.

With a Design and Illustration degree in hand, author and illustrator Kristin Roskifte has had her works published in a number of countries. She also co-directs the Magikon Forlag publishing house. She lives in Norway.

Magdalena Rutová a étudié l’illustration et le design graphique à Umprum. Fondatrice et seule employée de Linostock, la première agence photo de Linoritec (www.linostock.com). Elle aime surtout le portrait, le dessin et la gravure, la préparation d’œuvres d’art, l’écriture. Elle est l’auteur de bandes dessinées sur Expert et ses admirateurs. Elle consigne irrégulièrement les secrets de l’évolution de sa carrière dans son journal.

Tara Books
Ragini Siruguri is a visual communication designer from South India whose practice lies at the intersection of graphic design, photography, books and writing. Her approach to work is guided by the belief that any form of design is inseparable from the cultural and political context in which it is created. Currently, she is designing books with Tara Books.
Denyse UMUHUZA
Bakame
Denyse Umuhuza was born in Musanze, in the Northern Province of Rwanda. She published her first work for children “uruhimbi rwa nyanka”, in three languages (Kinyarwanda, French and English) with Editions Bakame. Her work “Uruhimbi rwa Nyanka”, in French “Le Secret de Nyanka” was elected best children’s book in Rwanda in 2016 and selected for the IBBY honor list in 2018. Denyse Umuhuza has also published a second children’s book “Karisa wa Munyantamati” with Editions Bakame. She has other unpublished manuscripts through which she indulges her passion of telling stories to children. She is co-founder of the first community library in her hometown, Agati Library.

Divya Vijayakumar is an editor and author from Chennai, India. She enjoys the collaborative process of creating books and contributes to various aspects of publishing at Tara Books, from marketing and social media to working closely with publishing partners around the world. She graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras with an MA in English Studies.
Tara Books
Gita Wolf founded the independent publishing house Tara Books based in India. An original and creative voice in contemporary Indian publishing, she is known for her interest in exploring and experimenting with the book form. She has written over twenty books for children and adults, several of which have won major international awards and been translated into several languages.
workshops
In keeping with the workshops concocted in the imaginary spheres of artists Bruno Munari or Katsumi Komagata, or true to the spirit of learning through kindergarten-inspired games and experimentation, l’œil du monde is focused on nurturing a playful, open-ended approach to creating and one prompted by curiosity and the desire for self-expression.
In our workshops, there are neither teachers (to mimic) nor students. Armed with nothing other than their respective toolboxes and techniques, artists walk each child through the thought process, helping each to identify and ignite artistic aspirations, while gently prodding each to tread boldly towards that solo flight made possible via practice takes and take-offs.
Our workshops are led by artists whose only interest is that of each child, encouraging this young public to naturally mutate from readers to creators. Using the artists’ prism as a beacon, children can better identify with the creative book writing process and the joy that ensues from the sharing of this object passed down from one person to the next, making its way from one country to the next, just like l’œil du monde.
